I think that the best way would be to get IBM VisualAge for COBOL, or Microfocus Net Express (ww.microfocus.com). They are both compatible with MF COBOL.
There are also some other solutions, like TinyCOBOL but they are compatilble with MF COBOL. Check These are the ones I used. Since i have got a compiler which runs as create a folder in any of your drive c:, d: with name as cobol then on command prompt type cobol followed by filename saved with.cob extension. After compiling type runcob followed by filename which has been compiled in previous step. This will work Regards Vishal vinisrcna Active User Joined: 26 May 2005 Location: Copenhagen, Denmark Posted: Fri Jul 08, 2005 4:38 pm Post subject: hi, iam having an idea to do it with cobol 85 compiler. But u should get the compiler from downloads. Its approximately around 800kb. Copy this compiler into any of ur drives(c,d.).
After this go to command prompt and enter this compiler directory. Type the command edit, u will get an editor where u can type in the cobol pgm after tat save it with a.cob extension. After these steps come back to dosprompt by using the keys Alt+f+x. Then type the command cobol3 filename.cob now this shows the pgm along with errors and warnings.
If its free of errors type the command crun3 filename (without extension) u will be able to see the output. Osx86. Infact you can find a cobol compiler from All you need to do is to extracts the zip file into your c: or d. Drives and then, open up your command prompt 1. Start- run - cmd ( for windows NT, xp, 2K) and chage to your cobol directory e.g. Edit your cobol program using your favourite editor, like EDIT, notepad.etc. To compile your programm, cobol programname.cbl it will give you three prompts for naming the obj, list etc files.
Jcl To Compile Cobol Program
You can avoid this by putting semicolon after your command cobol programname.cbl; 4. You need to link your program link programname; Note that you shouldn't include.cbl or.obj extension here in link command 5. If everything is okay, you should have programname.exe file generated which is your executible module. Well, running Microfocus cobol compiler on unix boxes like IBM aix is little different 1. Cob programname.cbl or cob -u programname.cbl This compiles and links the program 2. Runcob programname This runs the program Let me know if you need any further clarification.

Hello, I have Cobol programs copiled with Micro Focus 3.2. These programs are still running fine unter Windows NT 4.0 SP6. Now I want the same programs run on PC's with Windows XP Prof. And now I got problems. First the programms are running fine, but when the program tries to call a sub-program or a sub-program for print-output I got different error messages: 021 - File is a directory; 173 - Called program not found; no message - program simply hangs, the CPU use is 95% for task ntdvm; I tries to use FILES=150 and BUFFERS=50 in Config.sys, but it didn't helped. Can anybody help?
Thank's in advance. Frank RE: COBOL program under Windows XP (MIS) 23 Apr 04 12:11. Thanks a lot for your suggestions. I only mentioned the COBOL.DIR because I thought, the way I linked the files for the EXE-files is perhaps important. I know, that the COBOL.DIR-file has nothing to do with the execution of the programs. All EXE-files are in the same directory. And again: Under Windows NT I have no problems with running all programs, only with Windows XP.
So I think, coding and linking is ok, but the memory management under Windows XP causes problems. I tried BUFFER and FILES in the CONFIG.SYS without success. I will try it in the CONFIG.NT in SYSTEM32. This could be the solution, because Microsoft says that CONFIG.SYS is without any effect. And in the CONFIG.NT FUFFERS=20 is the standard.

That, of course, is not enough. I will report after I will be able to make a test run outside the test environment. RE: COBOL program under Windows XP (Programmer). On an XP machine you might be able to run the COBOL off of a directory with the OLD DOS in it.
Might also have to force the program to handle the memory as extended memory instead of the Windows virtual memory. I have heard of uing a shortcut and starting the compiler in a different directory so it knows where the DOS is. Might be some other tricks. You could take a computer and install NT and then install XP and make it dual boot. Oh, I hate that word.
There are some programs for virtual environments. Toms Hardware had an article on a product made by VMWare for Virtual Operating Systems. If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors. RE: COBOL program under Windows XP (Programmer) 5 May 04 12:15.
I’m not sure of the exact process, since I have an AMD processor but I can give you a general idea of what to do.Restart your computer and as it begins to restart press the ESC key, or sometimes F10 or F12. This will bring up the bios or even a start-up menu.If you get to a start-up menu, press the F-key to enter the bios. The virtualization option is probably on a configuration page of some sort. You will navigate around using your arrow keys and use enter to select things.
Be careful to not change other settings, because if the bios gets messed up your computer at worst may not start. And then you would have to reset to the defaults which is what you probably are running right now.
